Let’s face it: there aren’t too many “cool” things about going to appointments at the cancer center. No matter how pleasant the staff, punctual the appointments, or good the news I receive may be…I’m still driving over a half hour (well over in the case of rush hour) to get updates on my condition in a building full of other people fighting the cancer fight. Finding reasons and situations to smile a genuine smile can be challenging yet rewarding. One thing I’ve noticed is that in the elevators, people are infinitely more friendly and outgoing to each other than in any other elevator I’ve utilized. Not just the “what floor are you headed to,” but the sincere “have yourself a great day” or other warm and true farewell upon exiting the elevator…it’s a thing of beauty. I practice it and I receive it just about every single trip in the elevator. It’s like we’re all aware that we’re fighting the same fight, facing the same circumstances, and we are there for each other. It’s most certainly a bright light in a potentially dark situation, and it’s beautiful.
